Climate activists dissatisfied with Australia's handling of the climate crisis have on Monday morning created peak-hour mayhem in Brisbane as they took to their bikes to protest.

Extinction Rebellion, who have in the past glued themselves to the road, sat in on major bridges, and used lock on devices, met in Kurilpa Park in South Brisbane at 7.30.

'The 'Cycle Against Social Collapse' was aimed to bring attention to the 'climate and ecological crisis and one of it's dire outcomes – worldwide social collapse,' the group said.

'We are headed for complete annihilation. The amount of warming we are on track for, will literally mean the death of billions of people,' a statement on the group's Facebook said.

'Scientists say that at 4 or 5 degrees of warming, the earth could sustain a billion people.

'Our government could push us to 7 degrees … Show up and don't let them get away with it.'

The intention of the protest was to cause maximum traffic disruption.

Police liaisons will be present at the protest, and will communicate between police and activists. Organisers have told protesters if they are approached by police, they should be directed to the designated liaisons.

To ensure COVID-safety, protesters were asked to bring their own masks and hand sanitiser and to ride their bikes 1.5m apart.

Hannah Doole, who lead the protest, said the group would 'ramp up' protesting activity after COVID-19 forced them to lie low. Imazing 2 9 8.

'It may be antagonistic, and it may be more disruptive than people like but that is going to be nothing compared to wars over the loss of food,' Ms Doole told The Courier Mail.

'We're going to have to keep disrupting business-as-usual if we are to get any action.'

Ms Doole said the purpose of the protest was to call for 'an emergency assembly which puts decision making power in the hands of the people'.
